At the moment, the most advanced AI systems are in the hands of a small number of large corporations. These companies have produced impressive products, but the foundations of their technology are not open to the public. As a result, decisions about how AI is trained, governed, and distributed are made by a very limited group.

Sentient (SENT) takes a different approach. The project is building a decentralized framework where AI development happens in the open. Using blockchain infrastructure, Sentient enables developers across the globe to work together. The aim is to create an AI network owned and shaped by its contributors, capable of standing alongside major corporate labs without relying on centralized control.

What is Sentient?

Sentient is developing an open platform focused on the next stage of artificial intelligence, commonly referred to as AGI (Artificial General Intelligence). It is designed to compete with, and in some cases complement, closed platforms built by organizations such as OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google.

The project is based on the view that closed AGI systems pose a structural risk to society, since control is concentrated in the hands of a few actors. Sentient addresses this by making development transparent and verifiable. No single organization owns the network, which allows the value created by the system to flow back to the people who contribute to it and rely on it.

Who Founded Sentient?

The founding team combines deep experience in blockchain infrastructure with strong academic backgrounds. This mix is deliberate, as decentralized AI depends on distributed systems, cryptography, and advanced machine learning working together.

Polygon Co-Founder Sets the Direction

Sandeep Nailwal is the main driving force behind Sentient. As a co-founder of Polygon Labs, he helped build one of Ethereum’s most widely adopted scaling solutions. His background in open, community-based blockchain systems heavily influences Sentient’s approach to governance and ownership.

Academic Foundations from Princeton and IISc

Pramod Viswanath, a professor at Princeton University, contributes to the system’s core technical architecture. Himanshu Tyagi, a professor at the Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore, focuses on the theoretical AI research underlying the platform. Kenzi Wang completes the leadership group, bringing experience from Symbolic Capital and Sensys, an AI-focused venture studio that supports the surrounding ecosystem.

How Sentient Works?

Sentient functions as connective infrastructure for different parts of the AI ecosystem. At the center of this design is a system known as the Sentient GRID.

1. The Sentient GRID

The GRID can be thought of as a large, interconnected network linking data providers, models, compute resources, and development teams. On their own, independent developers often lack the scale to compete with major tech firms. By joining the GRID, their resources can be combined. This allows many smaller components to operate together as a single, coordinated intelligence system.

2. Decentralized coordination

Rather than relying on the hierarchical structure typical of traditional AI labs, Sentient uses distributed coordination through the GRID. This structure supports a practical approach to open AGI while maintaining performance standards expected from modern AI systems.

3. Community-led contributions

The network is built around active participation. Researchers and developers who contribute code, data, or meaningful improvements are rewarded by the protocol. The more value a participant adds, the more influence and access they gain within the ecosystem.

Investors and Support

The push toward open AI has drawn strong interest from investors. Sentient has raised funding through several rounds, including a seed round supported by Framework Ventures, Pantera Capital, Founders Fund, HashKey Capital, and others from the blockchain and venture capital sectors.

What is the SENT Token?

The SENT token is the economic backbone of the Sentient network. It aligns incentives between users, developers, and long-term supporters.

Payments

SENT is used to pay for access to AI services and assets available through the GRID.

Staking

Holders can stake tokens on AI artifacts they believe will gain adoption. Artifacts with more support receive a larger share of new token issuance.

Governance

Token holders participate in decisions on network parameters, upgrades, emission models, and the selection of Representatives who help guide the system.

The SENT token is listed on many platforms, including XT, Poloniex, Coinone and HTX. If you’re looking to list your token on similar platforms, understanding the token listing process and crypto exchange listing fees is essential.

Conclusion

Sentient is a serious attempt to build shared infrastructure for AI that is not owned by a single company. It combines established blockchain design principles with modern AI research to address limitations of today’s closed systems. While centralized models still dominate the landscape, Sentient offers an alternative focused on openness and shared control.

The project’s $85 million in funding, experienced leadership, and early products such as Sentient Chat and Dobby suggest tangible progress rather than theory alone. Advances in areas like model fingerprinting, secure enclaves, and multi-agent coordination point to real engineering work. Whether Sentient can match the scale of centralized competitors remains uncertain, but it has established a solid base for decentralized AGI that many in the industry will be watching closely.
